We’ve had quite a few people asking why there are no heavy bands included in the Festival line-up this year. In answer to this question, we’ve decided to publish the letter that the head of the artist team sent to the bands that fell under this genre. Hopefully this answers some questions.
First of all, thank you for applying to Festival One.
As you are probably aware, there are no heavy bands this year.
We would like to explain.
One of the big things for Festival One is “how does our community help the communities attending Festival?”
With this in mind, we have decided to not have any hardcore/metal bands at Festival.
We want this scene to flourish again, and that can only happen by supporting the local shows. We want fans of heavy music, to not just only go to Festival One to see heavy bands, but to go to shows week in, week out in their city centres.
What we see is incredible people putting on local shows, some who are in on this email, that are dedicated to the heavy music scene and we want those people supported as much as possible.
We are working on a few things with people to see what we can arrange for shows outside of Festival around Hamilton and Auckland and are looking into how we can incorporate them with Festival. We want to see Christians and non-Christians alike mix together for the love of heavy music, and we want to see people supporting all heavy bands, not just the Christian ones.
Unfortunately there is always people that are unfairly punished, and this of course is the bands & those that actually go to all the shows, every weekend, up and down the country!! To you guys, we are truly sorry.
Last year we had a few heavy bands and had minimal people attending those shows. We found this unfair to those that were playing and while they all played fantastic, and hopefully enjoyed themselves, they deserve to be playing to bigger crowds on stages equipped better for heavy music.
As quite a few of us in the team are lovers of heavy music, this has not been an easy decision. It’s one that we found extremely difficult, but through many discussions we have come to the conclusion that for now, this is what we have to do.
This does not mean you will never see heavy music again at Festival One. As the Festival grows, we hope to bring it back.
I hope you can see the heart behind this decision, and please get behind the local scene and promoters who work tirelessly putting on these shows.
If you have any further questions, please let us know.
