Murray Thom left school at 15 with no qualifications. By the age of 23 he was Managing Director of CBS Records New Zealand, the youngest Managing Director of that group in the world. With a strong desire to be self-employed he left the corporate life 30 years ago to ‘have a go’ on his own.

Murray’s boutique music company, Thom Music, has enjoyed great success, two of his productions: ‘Together’ and ‘Miracle’ both featuring on the Oprah Winfrey show. Other creations include ‘The Great New Zealand Songbook’; ‘The Great Australian Songbook’; and a commission from the Dean Martin Estate in the US to produce an iconic production – ’Cool Then, Cool Now’ – specifically for them.

His cookbook releases are a hit. ‘The Great New Zealand Cookbook’ featured 80 of New Zealand’s finest cooks, chefs and bakers. (On the NZ nonfiction bestsellers list for 38 consecutive weeks, and with 10 weeks at #1, its sales now exceed 120,000 copies.) In 2015 the book was named the category winner for ‘Best Easy Recipes’ at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards.

Following this successful format, Murray released ‘The Great Australian Cookbook’ in late 2015 . Then March 2016 saw the release of ‘The Great New Zealand Baking Book’ which enjoyed 17 weeks at #1 on the Bestsellers List.
His latest creation is ‘The Great New Zealand Birthday Cake Book’.

Murray’s other passion is sailing, in 2005 winning the World Laser Masters’ championship in Brazil. Married to Anne, Murray lives in Auckland and has 3 adult children.
