Matua (Matt) Hakiaha is of Iwi Ngati Pukeko and Ngai Tuhoe, and is a fluent speaker of Te Reo. A former Probation Officer and Youth Justice Co-ordinator for (then) Social Welfare, Matt has also worked with CYPF and been Specialist Advisor to the Ministerial Taskforce on Youth Offending.

He is the current Chairperson of the Runanga (Maori Council) at Laidlaw College, where he is also Kaiako (Lecturer), and Deputy Chairman of Mahi Tahi Akoranga Trust in Rotorua, and lives in Auckland with his wife Caroline and their daughter Anahera.
